2018/2019 Girls Basketball

We had three girls basketball teams this season Intermediate, (6th-8th grades), Novice (5th grade) and PeeWee (4th grade & under). All of last year’s coaches returned this season to once again lead their teams.

The Intermediate team, coached by Kathleen Fortune, Henry Correa, and Linda Stegmeier-Garofalo, had 13 players, 8 of them eighth graders, and 3 of them were starters returning from last year’s squad. The team was strong right out of the gate, starting the season with a 7 game winning streak. This was especially impressive with the number of underclassmen on the team, and well as girls who were playing basketball for the first time. The team finished the regular season 13-1, but then lost a heartbreaker 38-35 in the first round of the playoffs to a speedy St. Sebastian team.

Our Novice team, made up of 11 girls, 2 of them new players, was coach by Eric Keilbach, Tamra Pelleman and Steven Valad. The girls showed marked improvement from last year, starting the season with 3 big wins. They finished the regular season 7-7, including 2 wins against Monastery, one of the 2 teams in the Championship game. The Novice Eagles dropped the first round of the playoffs with a nail-biting 18-17 score.

The PeeWee girls team, coached by Daniel Madrazo and James Gildea, is made up of only 8 girls, 2 of them being new to the game, but what a great 8 kids! This was their first season competing in an age level where score is kept and playoffs are offered. The team started the season 8-0 before dropping a close game to St. Andrew’s. They finished the regular season 14-1, and then breezed through the first round of the playoffs, the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals. They play this Saturday, February 23rd for the Diocesan Championship, 5:00pm at St. John’s Prep in Astoria. Everyone is encouraged to attend the game and cheer our littlest Eagles on to victory! We hope our PeeWee Eagles bring home a Diocesan Championship trophy that’s as big as they are!
